Bottas: “I’m better than Hamilton”

Driver Valtteri Bottas believes he has better skills than his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

“I have to believe myself better than Hamilton and of course, when I get to my best, I know I can beat him,” Bottas told Sky Sports.

Bottas won the opening leg of the season – the Austrian Grand Prix. But the Finnish driver was once again behind in the race with Hamilton. By the time of the Portuguese Grand Prix on October 25, Hamilton was 69 points ahead of Bottas and had a great chance of equalizing Michael Schumacher’s record of seven F1 championships.

“Obviously, there are days when Hamilton got better. Over the last few years, when we were teammates, in general, he played better,” Bottas continued.

Hamilton won the F1 championship in the last six seasons. He is considered the main driver of Mercedes – the team has dominated the race for many years thanks to great advances in engines. Along with playing, Hamilton is known for being interested in social issues. Typically when he voiced his support for the Black Lives Matter campaign to fight for the rights of people.

Unlike teammates, Bottas only wanted to focus on expertise. “I don’t do politics. I just love racing. I like fair but challenging races, and will continue to pursue that,” he said.

The 31-year-old rider is pleased with his performance in the 2020 season, despite having won two wins from Hamilton’s first-place seven.

“My pace on the track is really good, outperforming previous years. I think, overall, my performance is positive,” Bottas said.

“As an athlete, when you do not meet your goals for a long time, the more frustration will build up in you. People are always judging even if they don’t understand you. Nobody knows what’s going on in mind. So, it is absurd to judge others based on what they see from the outside,” continued the Finnish driver.
